Plot in 3:

In the 1950s, Emmet Watson is released early from a work camp to care for his much younger, curious brother after the death of their father. They decide to travel the Lincoln Highway from their home in Nebraska to California, searching for their mother. The journey takes them in the opposite direction, to New York, because Emmet’s fugitive friends foil their plans.

My take:

This is lovely storytelling and character development. The journey Emmett and his brother, Billy, take is full of twists, turns, and a little bit of magic. It is a page-turner that dives deep into all the main four (Emmet, Billy, and the two fugitive friends) and the peripheral characters alike. The premise of the book and the foundation of all the characters is rooted in tragedy, but there is enough whimsy that I didn’t feel completely gutted.

In 3 words:

magical, tragic, epic

Verdict:

I recommend it. It is an easy read, and don’t let the page count deter you… it moves quickly.
